May is Better Sleep Month — and before we talk about blue light blockers or bedtime routines, we need to talk about something a little deeper. Something happening inside your body that no sleep mask or chamomile tea can fix on its own.
If you’re logging seven or eight hours and still waking up exhausted, you’re not imagining it. And you’re not alone. The problem might not be your habits at all — it might be what your body is quietly running out of.
When Eight Hours Isn’t Enough
We’ve all been there: you did everything right. You went to bed at a reasonable hour. You stayed off your phone (mostly). You even skipped that second glass of wine. And yet, morning comes and you feel like you never really rested.
Here’s something that often gets overlooked: sleep isn’t just a behavior — it’s a biological process. Your body needs specific nutrients to initiate and sustain the deep, restorative sleep cycles that actually leave you feeling refreshed. When those nutrients are low, even the best bedtime routine can fall short. The foundation has to be there first.
The Quiet Drain Nobody Talks About
Here’s the reality: everyday life depletes us. Chronic stress, intense exercise, a diet leaning on processed foods, caffeine, and alcohol — all of these quietly pull essential minerals from your body faster than most of us replenish them.
Magnesium is one of the biggest casualties of modern living. Research published in Nutrients found that magnesium deficiency shortens effective sleep duration and impairs sleep quality. And according to data from the National Institutes of Health, approximately half of the U.S. population doesn’t meet the estimated average requirement for magnesium from food alone.
B vitamins — especially B6 — matter too. Vitamin B6 acts as a cofactor in the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin, which your body then uses to produce melatonin. No B6, no smooth conversion. Zinc rounds out this trio; it’s been correlated with improved sleep quality and efficiency, in part by modulating neurotransmitter receptors in the brain that regulate your sleep cycles.
These aren’t obscure supplements. They’re foundational nutrients — and for many of us, they’re quietly in short supply.
Your Cells Are Thirsty Too
Dehydration is another piece of the puzzle that rarely comes up in sleep conversations, but it probably should.
Even mild dehydration can elevate cortisol — your primary stress hormone — making it harder for your body to settle into a restful state at night. Dehydration can also contribute to nighttime waking, difficulty falling back asleep, and those frustrating middle-of-the-night leg cramps. Research published in SLEEP found that adults who slept six hours or less had significantly lower hydration levels than those who slept eight hours, suggesting a meaningful bidirectional relationship between hydration and sleep.
And hydration isn’t just about drinking more water. Cellular hydration depends on electrolytes — sodium, potassium, and magnesium — which help regulate how your body actually retains and uses the fluids you take in. Drinking water without adequate electrolytes can still leave your cells running dry.
That 3 a.m. dry mouth or sudden leg cramp? It’s not random. It may be your body’s way of signaling that it needed more support before you ever closed your eyes.
What Your Body Is Actually Asking For
This isn’t about willpower. It’s not about being better at sleep. It’s about giving your body what it needs to do the job it already knows how to do.
A few places to start — no pressure, no overhaul required:
Look at your plate first. Magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, black beans, and dark chocolate are genuinely delicious ways to fill the gap. For B6, think salmon, chickpeas, bananas, and chicken. Zinc shows up in beef, shellfish, hemp seeds, and lentils.
Hydrate smarter, not just more. Sipping water consistently throughout the day — rather than chugging before bed — supports stable hydration overnight. If you’re active or under stress, electrolytes become even more important.
Consider your output. High-stress lifestyles and intense training significantly increase how much your body burns through these nutrients. If you’re pushing hard physically or emotionally, your baseline needs are higher — and food alone may not be enough to keep up.
Rest Is Not a Reward — It’s a Requirement
Your body deeply wants to sleep well. It’s designed to. But it can only do its job when it has the raw materials to work with.
If restless nights have felt like a mystery you can’t solve, this is worth exploring — not with urgency or judgment, just with curiosity. Pay attention to how you feel when you wake up. Notice what you’ve been eating (and what you haven’t). Consider whether the daily demands on your body might be quietly outpacing what you’re putting back in.
Understanding the why behind poor sleep is the first step toward actually changing it. And sometimes, the answer is simpler — and more nutritional — than we expect.
